Moorhead’s Sienna Lee becomes Minnesota’s first Youth Poet Laureate
The Moorhead High School senior said music helped her learn English and develop the poetry that won the inaugural state honor.
Moorhead High School student Sienna Lee has been named Minnesota's inaugural Youth Poet Laureate, marking a significant milestone for youth in the arts.
Inspired by National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman reading her work at President Joe Biden's 2021 inauguration, Lee began viewing poetry as a powerful way to move people.
The 17-year-old credits Moorhead High School's renowned speech program for boosting her confidence; she applied after tracking state legislative bills, a quirk she said showed her engagement.
Since moving to the United States from Korea over a decade ago, Lee has incorporated Korean language into her poetry to stay connected to her heritage, drawing inspiration from artists like Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
Recognizing that youth have a powerful voice, Lee hopes to elevate young artists across Minnesota and the Midwest, while exploring the interconnection between poetry and her evolving identity.
