Montreal and Buffalo tied 1-1 heading to game 3
Alexander Newhook scored twice and Montreal held Buffalo to one goal as the Canadiens took control with Game 3 ahead.
On Sunday, the Montreal Canadiens host the Buffalo Sabres for Game 3, with the second-round series tied 1-1 following Montreal's 5-1 victory in the last meeting.
Montreal forced the series tie Friday with a 5-1 win, as Alex Newhook and Mike Matheson scored early while Buffalo's defense and goaltender Alex Lyon collapsed.
Goalie Jakub Dobes stopped 28 of 29 shots Friday, while Montreal's Juraj Slafkovsky criticized Buffalo's physical play, saying, "I feel like all of their hits happen after the plays."
Coach Martin St. Louis inspired the squad with an "unbelievable" pregame speech, center Jake Evans said, adding, "It's going to be a war out there."
Sam Carrick remains "on the cusp" of returning to the lineup, as Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff expects improvement after his team dished out 44 hits to no avail Friday.
