Months later crashed vehicle remains in Revelstoke river as water drops

The Ministry of Environment and Parks is coordinating plans to remove a vehicle that plunged into the Illecillewaet River near Revelstoke last spring, with falling water levels now enabling a potential salvage operation.
In May, a motorist drove off the Trans-Canada Highway near Albert Canyon and exited the water-logged vehicle, which remained submerged for months due to elevated water levels preventing earlier access.
Water levels have dropped to about 32 centimetres, now exposing the vehicle as an obstacle for Apex Rafting guides navigating the river during their operations.
Environment ministry spokesperson David Karn confirmed that vehicle owners are responsible for financing salvage missions; Apex owner-operator Ralph Koerber obtained a recovery estimate but has received no timeline for retrieval.
The Province is considering adding a barrier along Highway 1 to prevent future incidents, while Apex concluded its 2026 season on September 8 as the recovery effort remains pending.
