Monica Lennon Not on Ballot for Labour Leadership with Marra and Fagan Running
Monica Lennon won backing from Unite and Unison but missed the parliamentary nomination threshold, setting up a two-candidate contest between Michael Marra and Joe Fagan.
On Monday, Scottish Labour confirmed finance spokesperson Michael Marra and South of Scotland MSP Joe Fagan as the only candidates eligible for the leadership ballot after Monica Lennon failed to secure the necessary threshold.
Candidates required public backing from three MSPs, three MPs, and two trade unions to qualify; Lennon fell short of the requirements, securing only two MPs despite having significant union support.
After failing to make the ballot, Lennon criticized the process, stating the party is "stuck in the past" and not listening to its members or the wider trade union movement.
First Minister John Swinney described the omission as a "stitch-up," questioning the party's selection mechanisms, as voting begins August 28 and runs until September 17, with the result declared on September 19.
Marra and Fagan will now compete in a month-long contest, with both candidates previously expressing skepticism regarding recent Scottish Parliament gender reforms while hustings are planned.
