SCOTUS Decision Opens Door for More State Bans of Men in Women’s Sports
The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld state laws requiring athletes to participate on sports teams according to their biological sex, arguing that these laws violate neither the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause nor Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. In its opinion, The Court holds that neither Title IX nor the Equal Protection Clause require West Virginia or Idaho to allow men who identify as women to participate in women’s athletics, a ruling which signals legal approval to the other state that have already enacted similar laws.
