Modi says Iran war poses severe risks to India, urges cuts in fuel use and gold purchases
Modi said households and farmers should conserve foreign exchange by cutting fuel, gold and fertilizer use as global energy costs rise.
In a 30-minute address at Parade Grounds in Hyderabad on Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to make "nationally responsible" lifestyle choices to help India withstand the West Asia energy crisis and global economic uncertainties.
Citing rising global energy prices and supply disruptions, Modi called for widespread fuel conservation including public transport use and reviving work-from-home practices adopted during COVID-19, stating, "In the current situation, we must place great emphasis on saving foreign exchange."
To reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves, the Prime Minister appealed to families to avoid non-essential gold purchases and overseas destination weddings for one year, while urging reduced cooking oil consumption as patriotic.
Modi urged farmers to cut chemical fertilizer usage by up to 50% and adopt solar-powered irrigation, while promoting "Vocal for Local" to prioritize indigenous Swadeshi products over foreign imports.
Stressing that safeguarding national interests is a shared duty, the Prime Minister stated every citizen and political organization must work together to overcome global challenges, seeking media support for these national objectives.
