Modi, Putin hold talks in New Delhi on trade, defence

The leaders are aiming to lift annual bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030 while widening cooperation in defense, energy and critical minerals, officials said.

  • On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held wide-ranging bilateral talks in New Delhi, pledging to deepen their "multifaceted and longstanding ties" anchored in a special and privileged strategic partnership across defence, energy and trade.
  • India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam on September 12-13, guiding the expanded 11-member bloc with the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability." The summit addresses global economic uncertainty from the Russia-Ukraine war and West Asia crisis.
  • Targeting $100 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030, Modi and Putin reviewed industrial partnerships including defence co-production. Modi gifted Putin a Russian translation of the Thirukkural, the ancient Tamil classic, symbolizing shared cultural heritage.
  • New Delhi deployed around 30,000 security personnel across the capital for the summit. India aims to position the bloc as a neutral, solutions-oriented forum despite competing interests among members on West Asia and Ukraine conflicts.
  • Analysts warn the bloc's rapid expansion creates internal constraints, with Harsh V. Pant of the Observer Research Foundation stating, "What was seen until last year as an achievement – the expansion of BRICS – today looks like a big constraint.
