Former California Firefighter May Have Faked Drowning Death to Evade Federal Charges, FBI Says
Investigators say Charles Johnathen Harris may have staged his death after a 2023 indictment for possessing child sexual abuse material.
The FBI added former California firefighter Charles Johnathen Harris to its Most Wanted list after investigators re-examined his 2023 death, suspecting he may have staged a boating accident to evade prosecution.
Federal prosecutors charged Harris in March 2023 with possessing child sexual abuse material. Investigators alleged he uploaded illicit content via Kik while working at the Alameda County Fire Department.
Harris allegedly drowned in a boating accident in Suisun Bay, California, on April 4, 2023. Federal investigators are now questioning whether the circumstances warrant further scrutiny, including the possibility his death was staged.
An arrest warrant was issued for Harris on April 21, 2023, after he failed to appear in court. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The FBI has issued a renewed public appeal for information regarding Harris's whereabouts. He may use the aliases 'Chuck Harris' or 'Charlie Harris' and is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing approximately 220 pounds, with red hair.
