Paleoanthropologist John Hawks blogged (August 25) about new genome studies of diverse worldwide populations suggesting most of our ancestry comes from an intermixture far predating that with Neanderthals or Denisovans. 20% of worldwide ancestry goes back 1.5 million years to a group that then split off and experienced a bottleneck but rose again to become 80% of our ancestry.
