Thousands being relocated to UK after personal data leak of Afghans
UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 15 – Nearly 4,500 Afghans and 3,600 family members were relocated at a cost of about £400 million under a secret scheme to protect those at risk from Taliban reprisals, officials said.
- Nearly 7,000 Afghans have arrived in the UK or are en route via a previously secret scheme called the Afghanistan Response Route, which was established in April 2024 after a data breach involving personal information of 19,000 Arap applicants.
- The data breach, committed by an unnamed MoD official in February 2022, resulted in the creation of the secret Afghan relocation scheme, which is estimated to have cost around £850 million once completed.
- An unprecedented superinjunction was made at the High Court in September 2023 to reduce the risk of alerting the Taliban to the existence of the data, as there was a "very real risk that people who would otherwise live will die" if the Taliban gained access to the data.
