Govt Notifies ₹62,500-Crore Mobile Phone Scheme, Targets ₹39 Lakh Crore Production in 5 Years
The scheme adds incentives for domestic sourcing and Indian design, and officials said it could create 60,000 direct jobs.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology notified the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme with a budgetary outlay of ₹62,500 crore to accelerate domestic smartphone assembly and increase local value addition.
IT Secretary S. Krishnan said the program aims to create 60,000 direct jobs, building on India's transformation from a phone importer to an exporter of finished handsets driven by earlier manufacturing initiatives.
Indian brands receive a flat 5% incentive without minimum sales thresholds, plus an additional 3% for local design and research, while foreign manufacturers must demonstrate a ₹10,000 crore turnover versus ₹1,000 crore for Indian brands.
Incentives are only disbursed for sales exceeding 115% of the previous fiscal year's production, with an additional 1.5% credit available for firms sourcing parts domestically at qualifying volumes.
By 2030-31, India aims for ₹39 lakh crore in cumulative production and ₹15 lakh crore in exports, positioning the nation as a major global handset manufacturer and reflecting long-term government ambitions.
