MLS Commissioner Don Garber Optimistic About CF Montreal’s Future
Garber said Olympic Stadium could become CF Montréal’s permanent home, but a $500 million modernization still lacks committed funding.
On Thursday, Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber visited Montreal and pressed the province to fund a broader renovation of the Olympic Stadium, built for the 1976 Summer Olympics, to ensure CF Montréal's long-term viability.
The league's upcoming 2027 shift to a fall-to-spring calendar forces northern clubs to play winter fixtures, making Garber note that Stade Saputo's open-air, roughly 20,000-seat facility is inadequate for future needs.
While Quebec is funding an $870-million roof replacement, Garber advocated for a separate $500-million project to modernize the venue, which holds about 60,000 spectators, into an MLS 3.0 facility.
Garber described the ongoing renovations as "remarkable," but cautioned that the stadium requires a full overhaul, stating "What they want is to have a best-in-class facility."
If the broader redevelopment proceeds, the commissioner believes the project could transform the venue into one of the world's premier soccer stadiums, capable of hosting major events and generating significant commercial revenue.
