Mizzou track and field's Valentina Barrios wins conference title on Day 1 of Outdoor SEC Championships
Barrios added the SEC crown after throwing 191-3, giving Mizzou its first javelin title at the meet.
On Thursday in Auburn, Alabama, defending national champion Valentina Barrios won the SEC Outdoor Championships javelin title with a throw of 191-3, becoming Mizzou's first conference javelin champion.
Barrios made history as Mizzou's first javelin champion in a conference title, building on her previous 191-1 performance at the 1977 Big 8 Outdoor Conference Championships under program record-holder Cindy Kiser.
Mizzou coach Brett Halter praised Barrios' effort, saying "Valentina battled hard today, as did our entire group," crediting his training approach for the championship performance.
Barrios' throw approaches the program record held by Chris Rohr, while teammate Sam Innes recorded a personal best with a throw of 235-1 in the men's hammer throw to take second.
The SEC title reinforces Barrios' status as a national javelin contender, with her 191-3 mark positioning Mizzou's program as a force in postseason competition.
