Mitsubishi wants to build a high-performance Pajero
A senior executive said Mitsubishi is developing a conventional hybrid and a plug-in hybrid to improve acceleration and around-town performance.
- Mitsubishi Motors is developing hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the new Pajero, with Mitsubishi Pajero Chief Product Specialist Itagaki Kunitoshi confirming the advanced state of these plans at the vehicle's world premiere.
- These electrified models will feature petrol engines to attract markets where diesel is unpopular, such as the Middle Eastern region, positioning Mitsubishi against Toyota, Nissan, and Chinese rivals like the BYD Shark.
- The current Pajero uses a turbocharged 2.4-litre diesel engine, but engineers face challenges with the hybrid setup. Added weight from the petrol-electric system could reduce load-lugging capacity from the diesel version's 3,500 kilogram limit.
- Mitsubishi plans to produce these electrified vehicles at its Thailand factory, which is undergoing upgrades. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid Pajero variants are expected to arrive sooner than the end of the decade.
- Itagaki stated, "However, Mitsubishi Motors is actively conducting research and development." He emphasized that ensuring models maintain the distinct Mitsubishi Motors driving experience requires further development to meet brand performance standards.
