Mitsubishi wants to build a high-performance Pajero
Mitsubishi is developing conventional and plug-in hybrid Pajero 4WDs to improve acceleration and around-town performance while preserving off-road capability.
- Mitsubishi is developing hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Pajero, confirmed by Mitsubishi Pajero Chief Product Specialist Itagaki Kunitoshi at the vehicle's world premiere event.
- Earlier this year, Mitsubishi announced a half-billion-dollar upgrade to its Thailand factory, which produces the Triton and Pajero, to build electrified vehicles by decade's end.
- The current Pajero uses a turbocharged 2.4-litre diesel engine; hybrid configurations may reduce the vehicle's load-lugging capacity below the diesel version's 3500kg limit.
- Petrol-Based hybrids target US and Middle Eastern markets where diesel is unpopular, positioning Mitsubishi against Toyota, Nissan, and Chinese competitors like the BYD Shark 6.
- Development remains focused on preserving off-road capability; Itagaki stated, "Ensuring the electrified models can maintain these characteristics," as future Mitsubishi Motors vehicles must retain expected durability and performance.
