Mitsubishi wants to build a high-performance Pajero
Mitsubishi says the petrol-electric models are meant to improve acceleration and around-town performance while competing with larger rivals.
- Mitsubishi is developing both conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the rugged Pajero. A senior Japanese executive confirmed these plans to expand the off-roader's appeal beyond current diesel-only models.
- New petrol-based hybrids target Middle Eastern markets where diesel is less popular. This strategy provides Mitsubishi a direct rival to Chinese machines such as the BYD Shark 6 and Denza.
- The current Pajero uses a 2.4-litre diesel engine, but adding hybrid components increases weight, likely reducing load-lugging capacity from the diesel version's 3500kg limit.
- Upgrading its Thailand factory, Mitsubishi will build electrified vehicles. This facility currently produces the Triton and Pajero and will manufacture these new models.
- Regarding performance standards, Mitsubishi Pajero Chief Product Specialist Itagaki Kunitoshi stated future electrified models must maintain durability and reliability expected of authentic Mitsubishi Motors vehicles.
