The youth offices in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2024 admitted fewer minors to homes and foster families, but neglect and mistreatment have increased.

Youth welfare offices in Germany temporarily took around 69,500 children and young people into care for their protection in 2024. This was a good 5,100 fewer boys and girls than in the previous year (-7%). According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this represents the first decline in the number of protective measures after having increased for three consecutive years.
