4th Death Reported in Mississippi Due to Severe Winter Weather

Winter Storm Fern caused four deaths and left 140,000 without power as crews and the National Guard work on restoration and aid across Mississippi.

  • On Jan. 27, Gov. Tate Reeves announced a fourth weather-related death in Mississippi, locating it in Leflore County during a statewide briefing and Facebook post.
  • Winter Storm Fern produced dangerously cold conditions across Mississippi, leaving over 143,000 utility customers without power late Tuesday morning, down from 180,000, Reeves said.
  • Coroners reported a Jan. 26 house fire at 2814 Twin Lake Boulevard likely killed a resident, and Tishomingo County coroner Mack Wilemon said Timothy Steele, 73, died Jan. 25 when a tree limb fell through his mobile home near Iuka.
  • Shelters across the state are providing warmth as utility crews work to restore power, Reeves said, 'While utility companies are starting to make some progress, there is still a lot of work to be done.'
  • With another cold snap forecast for the upcoming weekend, at least 30 deaths have been reported across the U.S., and autopsy and identification processes are ongoing.
