Mission Man Recovering From Bear Attack
BCCOS said the bear had a history of no fear of humans, and two yearlings were captured and relocated after the attack.
On Monday, May 18, a black bear attacked Mission resident Gordon Gwyn outside his home on Victoria Day, striking his arm as he attempted to retreat indoors.
The BCCOS responded to the Mission home following reports of the attack and identified the animal through witness descriptions and physical evidence before killing the bear on Tuesday.
Investigators determined the offending animal had a history of displaying no fear of humans; the BCCOS captured and relocated two other young bears on Tuesday after determining they were not involved in the attack.
Although the offending bear is gone, the Conservation Officer Service warned that potential conflicts with wildlife remain a significant risk for residents in and around the Mission area.
Residents are asked to secure attractants, leash pets, and avoid approaching bears to prevent future encounters; Instances of aggressive behaviour can be reported to the BCCOS at 1-877-952-7277.
