Minnesota Star Tribune to lay off 15% of its workforce, publisher announces
The company said buyouts will come first for union-represented employees as it shrinks the newsroom to about 175 workers.
- On Tuesday, the Minnesota Star Tribune notified employees of a restructuring resulting in 15% staff cuts, or approximately 65 employees. CEO Steve Grove called the move 'a difficult step' in the effort to sustain the organization.
- Grove cited ongoing disruptions to the business model as the primary driver for these cuts. The restructuring follows a December 2025 round of layoffs where more than 150 employees were let go after the company's downtown Minneapolis printing plant closed.
- Journalists focused on news gathering are exempt from the cuts, though the newsroom will decline to approximately 175 employees. The organization reports digital subscription growth of more than 25% after several years of stagnation.
- The Star Tribune Newspaper Guild will first negotiate buyouts for affected departments before any layoffs occur. Jeff Day, a reporter and Guild co-chair, said the union intends to fight, arguing the decision 'lacks any foundation in reality.'
- Minnesota billionaire Glen Taylor, who has owned the newspaper since 2014, is reportedly considering placing the for-profit organization under a nonprofit foundation structure. Grove suggested this model could expand philanthropic opportunities to support the Star Tribune's core business.
