New Tip Program Launched to Help Solve Cases of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Relatives
MINNESOTA, JUL 23 – The program offers up to $10,000 rewards for tips advancing 16 active cases to address disproportionate rates of missing Indigenous persons in Minnesota, officials said.
- On Wednesday, July 23, Minnesota officials launched the Gaagige-Mikwendaagoziwag Reward Fund Tip Program, offering up to $10,000 for tips.
- During the 2022-2023 legislative session, lawmakers created the Gaagige-Mikwendaagoziwag reward fund, funded by $250,000 plus $100,000 from license plate sales.
- Reward tiers include $1,000–$2,500 for identity tips, up to $5,000 for arrests or progress, and up to $10,000 for remains recovery or case closure, Ana Negrete said, and 16 active cases currently qualify for rewards under the program.
- Bob Jacobson said families demanded action, and officials hope this step will bring resolution and closure to families impacted by the MMIR epidemic.
- Amid disproportionate rates, MMIR data shows Indigenous women make up 1% of Minnesota’s population but account for 10% of missing women this year, and the program will support community awareness, collaborative search efforts and prevention initiatives.
