Minneapolis daycare denies fraud allegations after viral video draws national attention
Minneapolis daycare serves 50 to 80 children daily and employs 25 workers, denying fraud allegations after video showed closed doors and empty parking lot.
- On December 29, the Quality Learning Center on Nicollet Avenue denied fraud allegations and remained open, with manager Ibrahim Ali inviting critics to visit during posted hours.
- A video posted by Nick Shirley showed locked doors, a misspelled sign and a nearly-empty parking lot, drawing national attention from FBI Director Kash Patel and Vice President JD Vance.
- Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families staff visited the centers on Monday to evaluate the claims and had inspected the sites at least once in the past six months, while Shirley arrived around 11 a.m., outside posted hours of Monday–Thursday, 2 to 10 p.m.
- Commissioner Tikki Brown said, `While we have questions about some of the methods that were used in the video, we do take the concerns that the video raises about fraud very seriously` and noted DCYF can suspend or revoke licenses for serious child-safety concerns.
- Officials note the episode sits amid broader probes that say more than $1 billion has been stolen, a federal prosecutor estimated $9 billion or more may be missing, and more than 92 people have been charged.
