Justice Min. apologizes for claim about uninvestigated crimes; Passes no-confidence vote
Justice Minister David van Weel has apologized for remarks he made about a Netherlands Court of Audit report on serious crimes that were not pursued by the justice authorities. During a parliamentary debate on the issue, he said his attempt to “put the findings into context” may have given the impression that he was questioning or downplaying the report, which was not his intention.
Van Weel's apologies are not well received in the House. "Aren't you sweeping crime under the carpet?" asks Annelotte Lamers (Markuszower Group).
Only after hours of debate and a threatened motion of no confidence did the VVD Minister of Security and Justice acknowledge that he had given the House of Representatives a false picture of the number of unprocessed reports at the police.
