North Korean DMZ Landmine Blasts 'Violation of Armistice,' Seoul Says

- On Tuesday, Defence Minister Kang Shin-chul reported that North Korean mines caused a blast last week in the Demilitarized Zone, injuring two South Korean personnel and violating the Korean War armistice agreement.
- Kang told a parliamentary committee the mines appeared planted during North Korean border fortification work near the Military Demarcation Line that bisects the DMZ.
- Joint Chiefs of Staff and United Nations Command investigators found an additional resin anti-personnel mine near the blast site, with JCS Vice Chairman Kwon Dae-won assessing the mines were placed south of the MDL.
- "The responsibility lies with North Korea, so we will take corresponding measures," Kang said, adding the military plans to implement response options in stages.
- This incident complicates South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's efforts to draw Pyongyang back to dialogue, as North Korea has declared South Korea an enemy state and abandoned peaceful reunification goals.
