Minecraft Finally Has a Switch 2 Release Date, but There May Be Bad News for Switch 1 Owners
Mojang says current Switch owners will get an upgrade path, while Vibrant Visuals will be enabled by default and some modes remain limited.
- On Wednesday, Developer Mojang announced Minecraft will launch on the Nintendo Switch on Oct. 27, with the native version optimized for the console and featuring Vibrant Visuals by default.
- Vibrant Visuals, which debuted last year as part of the Chase the Skies update, introduces enhanced lighting, volumetric fog, directional lighting, and detailed shadows to Minecraft's classic blocky style.
- Mojang is offering an upgrade path for existing owners of the original Nintendo Switch version, though Vibrant Visuals will not be available in split-screen play, certain game modes, or specific Marketplace Worlds.
- Expanding the series, Minecraft Dungeons hits consoles, including the Switch, on Sept. 29, introducing new biomes, enemies, and cooperative adventures next year.
- This release caps off a busy year for Minecraft, which continues to evolve through frequent updates; additionally, a new film project, A Minecraft Movie Squared, is in development with a 2027 release date.
