Millions of people with money in savings accounts are expected to face tax bills on their interest as the amount collected by the Treasury is forecast to reach a record £9.1 billion. Around 4.7 million people are expected to pay tax on savings interest in 2027-28, according to HM Revenue and Customs figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.
That would be around 200,000 more people than in the current tax year.
