Millionaire trophy hunter trampled to death by pack of elephants in central Africa
The guide was seriously injured and Dosio’s body is being repatriated to California after the attack, officials said.
- On April 17, 75-year-old Californian vineyard owner Ernie Dosio was trampled to death by five elephants while hunting in Gabon's Lope-Okanda forest.
- Dosio and his professional hunter were stalking a rare yellow-backed duiker when they unexpectedly encountered five elephant cows protecting a calf, triggering a charge.
- Under strict licensing laws, Dosio was restricted to a shotgun for the hunt. Safari company Collect Africa confirmed the pair encountered five cow elephants while pursuing the duiker.
- The United States Embassy in Gabon is repatriating Dosio's body to Lodi, California. He is survived by long-term partner Betty and sons Jeff and Blake.
- Dosio served 30 years as Great Elk, supporting military veterans and youth scholarships. Supporters describe him as a keen conservationist, though his death underscores risks in Gabon's vast protected forests.
