Military Police Complaints Commission investigates botched shooter drill on CAF base
MONTREAL, JUL 23 – The commission will review allegations of improper detention and trauma during a drill that caused at least two employees to take leave, the union said.
- An investigation is underway into a failed active-shooter exercise conducted on November 12, 2024, at the Canadian Forces Base Longue-Pointe in Montreal, overseen by the body responsible for military police oversight.
- The investigation followed a complaint filed November 21, 2024, after military police allegedly mistook a civilian employee for a drill participant and used excessive force during the exercise.
- Reports say the employee was wrestled to the ground, had clothing torn, was searched, dragged outside in winter with inadequate clothing, and other civilians thought the drill was a real attack.
- MPCC chair Tammy Tremblay called the allegations troubling and said they could breach fundamental rights, announcing a forthcoming mainly virtual public hearing with dates yet to be set.
- The MPCC noted that significant concerns remain unresolved, the complaint was handed over to the military police authority responsible for conduct issues, and National Defence intends to establish joint civilian and military panels to address disciplinary matters involving misconduct.
