Patriots Coach Mike Vrabel Addresses Christian Gonzalez’s Recent Absence Amid Contract Talks
Mike Vrabel said the Pro Bowl cornerback missed practice and the preseason opener because of an injury, not contract talks.
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed cornerback Christian Gonzalez missed Tuesday's joint practice with the Colts and Thursday's preseason opener due to injury, stating the star defender was "physically unavailable."
Ongoing contract negotiations fueling speculation that Gonzalez is staging a hold-in, though the team maintains his absence stems purely from injury as he seeks to become the league's highest-paid cornerback.
After falling during Monday's session covering wide receiver Romeo Doubs, Vrabel grouped Gonzalez with injured teammates Christian Elliss and Harold Landry, telling reporters, "Christian was unavailable, physically unavailable for the practice."
Patriots owner Robert Kraft previously confirmed a record-setting offer, while Vrabel emphasized Gonzalez's professionalism working with director of sports performance Frank Piraino to manage his recovery.
With joint practices against Philadelphia approaching next week, Gonzalez's status remains a focal point for New England's defensive plans as Vrabel prepares to provide further updates before upcoming practices.
