Inspection of Farmville Detention Center in 2024 Finds Several Violations of Medical Care Policies, Procedures
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, JUL 21 – A 92-page report by Human Rights Watch and partners documents medical neglect, overcrowding, and degrading treatment affecting over 2,500 migrants in three Miami detention centers.
- In February, the Federal Detention Center, Miami began holding hundreds of immigrants after years out of detention use, amid a surge in nationwide immigration detention under the Trump administration, with 90% of beds operated by for-profit private companies.
- Some detainees’ pleas for chest pain and hernia treatment were ignored, a doctor warned of likely rupture and at least two deaths were linked to medical neglect.
- The report’s authors urged ending default detention and expanding community-based alternatives, while Belkis Wille said detainees were being treated as less than human.
- Next month, lawmakers will inject US$45 billion into facility construction, and Tom Homan said ICE needs at least 100,000 beds to meet deportation plans.
