Hundreds Dead in Mass Iran Protests, Activists Say
The protests began over economic collapse and sanctions, with activists reporting 538 dead and 10,670 detained amid a nationwide crackdown.
- On Sunday, nationwide protests in Iran continued, with activists saying more than 500 protesters died and more than 10,000 were detained in recent weeks.
- The demonstrations began on December 28 after the Iranian rial collapsed, trading at over 1.4 million to $US1, as economic hardship, sanctions, and last year’s brief war with Israel escalated unrest against the theocratic leadership.
- With the internet down, state television aired funerals, morgue footage and a pickup truck of bodies while activists tallied at least 538 dead, reporting 490 protesters and 48 security forces killed.
- U.S. officials have been briefed on options, including military strikes and cyberattacks, while the White House has not indicated any decisions, according to Saturday reports, and Qalibaf warned of targets in the region.
- Any decision to escalate would rest with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran, amid uncertainty after June air-defence losses, and Israel is watching closely as Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
