Meet Mu, the Small Language Model in Charge of Microsoft's Settings AI Agent

  • On June 23, 2025, Microsoft introduced Mu, a compact language model embedded directly in Windows 11 Settings, available for Copilot+ PCs.
  • Microsoft developed Mu to power an AI agent that understands natural language queries for system settings and runs efficiently on local NPUs.
  • Mu has 330 million parameters with an encoder-decoder design that cuts first-token latency nearly 47% and improves decoding speed 4.7 times over similar models.
  • Despite being only one-tenth the size, Mu achieves performance close to that of the much larger Phi-3.5-mini model and operates locally at speeds exceeding 100 tokens per second.
  • The AI agent aims to improve ease of use in Windows Settings, currently available to Windows Insiders with Copilot+ PCs, and Microsoft welcomes user feedback.
