NLWeb Is Microsoft's Project to Bring More Chatbots to Web Pages

Microsoft announced NLWeb at BUILD 2025 as an open protocol enabling websites and apps to offer AI-powered natural language search features.
Ramanathan V. Guha, a senior expert at Microsoft known for creating RSS and Schema.org, developed NLWeb to make conversational AI more accessible despite the internet’s longstanding issues with centralization.
NLWeb requires minimal coding, the site’s own data, and an AI model to process complex queries and remembers user preferences like dietary restrictions.
Guha described NLWeb as a system that enables users to pose questions in everyday language, with responses delivered in a structured format, and noted that partners involved include Shopify, TripAdvisor, Eventbrite, and O'Reilly.
NLWeb aims to let websites interact, transact, and be discoverable by agents, potentially playing a role akin to HTML for the evolving agentic web.
