Michael 2 Could Feature 'Cut' Scenes Shot for First Film

Lionsgate says the sequel could reuse cut material and more of Jackson’s catalog, after the first film grossed more than $700 million worldwide.

  • On Thursday, Lionsgate film chair Adam Fogelson announced the studio is developing a Michael 2 sequel. Fogelson said, "All the conversations that we've been having with all of the appropriate parties continue to go exceptionally well."
  • The first Michael film grossed over $713 million worldwide, making it one of 2026's biggest hits. Lionsgate already has about 25 to 30% of the sequel shot using material cut from the original production.
  • After attorneys discovered a settlement clause barring the depiction of accuser Jordan Chandler, the studio scrapped the third act of the original Michael. This legal discovery forced major production rework.
  • Director Antoine Fuqua may not return immediately; he is currently working on a Hannibal film for Netflix with Denzel Washington. His availability for the sequel remains unclear.
  • Fogelson indicated the sequel will move Michael Jackson's story forward and "double back on the King of Pop's life to cover moments that weren't chronicled" in the original. The film will explore untouched portions of his music catalog.
