MHSAA Approves New NIL Opportunities for Michigan High School Athletes
The policy allows student-athletes to pursue endorsements, autograph signings, and more while excluding boosters and enforcing strict disclosure and timing rules.
- On Jan. 27, the Michigan High School Athletic Association expanded personal-branding rules to let student-athletes at member schools earn money through NIL-style opportunities, effective immediately.
- Following a 2023 state law change that allowed NIL for students, the MHSAA Representative Council updated its policy after three years reviewing neighboring states' developments.
- Under the written policy, student-athletes may engage in social-media endorsements, autograph and photo sessions, apparel and merchandise sales, and product endorsements but cannot use MHSAA member school names, logos, mascots, uniforms or conduct PBA during school hours, MHSAA events, or on school property.
- All PBA deals must be reported at least seven days before acceptance, schools, coaches and boosters cannot arrange opportunities, and member school discretion may impose stricter rules risking MHSAA membership and athlete eligibility.
- Michigan joins other states as the 46th to allow high-school NIL policies, and MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl says the change preserves competitive equity while enabling opportunities for highly recruited prospects.
