Mexico, Chile and Uruguay halt poultry imports from Brazil after bird flu outbreak
- Following Brazil's announcement of its initial avian influenza case on a commercial poultry operation, Mexico, Chile, and Uruguay have suspended their imports of Brazilian poultry products.
- The import restrictions followed international health certificate rules agreed upon with each importing country and came after similar halts by China and the European Union on Friday.
- Brazil detected the virus at a facility in Rio Grande do Sul and implemented a contingency plan to eliminate the disease and maintain production capacity and food supply.
- Brazil produces a significant share of the world's chicken meat—around 14%—and experienced a surge in egg exports to the U.S. During the first four months of 2025, increasing by over 1,000% as a result of American egg shortages caused by avian influenza.
- The export halts highlight ongoing sanitary concerns that Brazil has faced before, including a 2018 EU import ban, and Brazil notified health organizations and trade partners accordingly.
