Mexico President Sheinbaum Gifts Her World Cup Ticket to Indigenous Athlete
Sheinbaum said the winners will represent Mexico, not officials, after awarding tickets to four young women selected in a ball-juggling contest.
- On Friday, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum donated her World Cup opening-match ticket to Yolett Cervantes Cuaquehua, a 21-year-old Indigenous woman from Veracruz who won a national ball-juggling contest.
- Sheinbaum launched the contest three months ago to identify a young woman to represent Mexico at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, stating she wanted to highlight young female talent rather than attending herself.
- Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada and Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez also donated tickets as prizes; three other juggling-contest runners-up received passes to matches in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.
- Mayor Brugada declared, "Football has no gender, no owner," while announcing the capital will host 18 football festival sites during the tournament where fans can watch matches and participate in cultural activities.
- Preparations continue across the capital, including near-completion of renovations at 20 Metro stations, while a Guinness World Record wave attempt is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, on Paseo de la Reforma.
