- On Thursday, Cristian Fernando Gutierrez-Ochoa was sentenced in Washington to more than 11 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to laundering millions in drug proceeds.
- Authorities say Gutierrez-Ochoa faked his death in Mexico and fled to Riverside, California, living under a phony identity; prosecutors described him as a trained CJNG operative embedded in the U.S.
- Court filings show he and his girlfriend, a U.S. citizen, lived in a $1.2 million home bought with laundered cartel money, and he was wanted in Mexico for kidnapping two Mexican Navy members in 2021.
- It follows other heavy sentences for CJNG figures, as the U.S. State Department offers up to $15 million for El Mencho and other leaders have received long prison terms after the February designation.
- At sentencing Gutierrez-Ochoa told the judge he accepts responsibility, saying `I regret all of this,` through a translator and `Never again will I make a mistake like this in my life,` while Judge Beryl Howell called it `a dangerous way to make a living.
