Polanco Returns to the Mets' Lineup After Missing 3 Months with Wrist, Achilles Injuries
Polanco is expected to spend most of the season at designated hitter as the Mets manage his chronic Achilles injury.
On Tuesday, Jorge Polanco returned to the New York Mets' lineup after missing nearly three months with right wrist and left Achilles injuries, batting sixth as the designated hitter.
To make room for Polanco, the Mets optioned infielder Ronny Mauricio to Triple-A Syracuse; Polanco had signed a two-year, $40 million deal expecting to replace Pete Alonso at first base.
Interim manager Andy Green said Polanco will not play every day at designated hitter, though his presence off the bench as a switch-hitter will provide flexibility in late innings.
Designating pitchers Guillermo Zuniga and Alex Carrillo for assignment, the Mets added right-hander Matt Seelinger to the active roster; Seelinger, a 31-year-old native of Westbury, New York, is making his first trip to the majors.
Opening a three-game series with the Royals on Tuesday night at Citi Field, the Mets face former reliever Seth Lugo, who has been a starter since his departure following the 2022 season.
