- Meta aims to capture a larger share of the $223 billion global eyewear market, where prescription lenses account for roughly 69 per cent of sales, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg noting that 'billions of people wear glasses or contacts for vision correction.'
- The devices are manufactured by Franco-Italian conglomerate EssilorLuxottica, which controls optical retail channels; Bloomberg reported in February that the two companies are working through disagreements over pricing and strategy.
- Plaintiffs Gina Bartone and Mateo Canu filed a class action lawsuit against Meta and Luxottica of America on March 4, alleging the companies failed to disclose that captured videos are transmitted to Kenyan subcontractors for manual labeling.
