Meta Plans Petal, the First Transoceanic Subsea Cable at Petabit Capacity

- On Thursday, Meta announced Petal, a subsea cable system stretching roughly 7,000 kilometers between the United States and France, designed to carry a petabit of data every second.
- Undersea cables carry about 99% of intercontinental internet traffic, prompting Meta to expand digital infrastructure. Vice President Alex-Handrah Aime said the investment is "foundational to delivering the high quality services our end users expect."
- Built with NEC Corporation and Sumitomo Electric Industries, Petal features a 24-fiber-pair system equivalent to 48 fiber pairs, moving 125,000 gigabytes of data per second across the Atlantic.
- In France, Orange will manage the cable landing using a Fan-In/Fan-Out interface. Takahiro Kashima, director of NEC's submarine business development, called the deployment "very significant" for future growth.
- Meta expects Petal to enter commercial service in 2029, though the timeline depends on regulatory approval, ocean permitting, and manufacturing timelines that often slip for infrastructure projects of this scale.
