Meta's Muse AI Tool Sparks Privacy Backlash
The model lets users tag public Instagram accounts and create AI images in Meta AI, while advertisers gain new creative tools.
- On Tuesday, Meta Superintelligence Labs launched Muse Image, its first in-house AI image-generation model, available across Meta AI, Instagram, and WhatsApp with more than 30 new effects for Instagram Stories.
- To compete with rivals like OpenAI and Google, Meta developed Muse Image to replace third-party vendors, centralizing AI capabilities and tightening product integration across its ecosystem.
- Public Instagram accounts are automatically enrolled in the tool, allowing others to use profile photos for AI generations unless users manually opt out via settings; private accounts remain excluded.
- Creative Artists Agency and Public Citizen denounced the opt-out policy, calling the feature "an egregious invasion of user privacy" and demanding stronger consent protections for individuals.
- Meta intends to expand Muse Image to Facebook and Messenger later this year while developing Muse Video, an AI video generator currently in preview for the Meta AI app.
