Meta's Louisiana AI Data Center Expansion Tops $50 Billion, Adds 7,500 Jobs

Meta said the expanded campus will support 1,000 jobs and more than $1.6 billion in local contracts as it builds AI computing capacity.

  • On Monday, Meta announced it will expand its Hyperion data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, to a 5GW facility costing over $50 billion, making it the company's largest data center project.
  • Previously, the project was planned as a 2GW facility costing $27 billion through a joint venture with Blue Owl Capital Inc. to manage the buildout and facility operations.
  • Since construction began in December 2024, local businesses in Louisiana have received over $1.6 billion in contracts from Meta. The company pledged over $1 billion for infrastructure improvements including roads and water systems.
  • Bloomberg reported Meta is developing plans for a cloud infrastructure business, potentially selling access to 'raw' computing capacity to outsiders akin to neocloud competitors like CoreWeave Inc.
  • Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has pledged to spend at least $600 billion on US infrastructure projects over the next few years to achieve his goal of AI superintelligence.
