Meta to test premium subscriptions on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp: Report

On Tuesday, TechCrunch reported Meta Platforms will test subscription models across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp in the coming months, with core services remaining free and subscriptions as optional upgrades.
To help recoup AI spending, Meta Platforms plans to scale Manus, an AI agent developer it recently acquired for $2 billion, into subscription plans to boost productivity for paid users.
Notably, Instagram's paid tier may offer unlimited audience lists, follower insights, and anonymous Story viewing, while Vibes will remain freemium with advanced editing reserved for paying users.
Rivals show demand — Snapchat+ has topped 16 million subscribers, but Meta faces subscription fatigue and says it will gather user feedback to refine pricing and features.
The move positions Meta amid AI competition and cost pressures as Chinese officials review Manus for technology-control violations, while Meta's Llama models remain open-source unlike paid rivals OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
