Meta Platforms Does It Again, Signs a Multi-Billion Deal With Google

  • On Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta Platforms struck a multi-billion-dollar, multi-year deal to lease Alphabet Inc.'s Google's Tensor Processing Units for advanced AI models, Reuters reported.
  • Amid companies pouring billions into chips and AI infrastructure, Meta has significantly ramped up its AI spending in the past few weeks, and earlier this month signed a deal with Nvidia to buy AI chips.
  • Google has been positioning its Tensor Processing Units as an alternative to Nvidia's market-leading GPUs and signed an agreement with an unidentified large investment firm to lease TPUs via Google Cloud.
  • The Information reported Meta is in talks with Google to buy TPUs for data centers as soon as next year, and Meta shares rose 0.51% during Thursday's regular session.
  • Earlier this week, Advanced Micro Devices said it would sell up to US$60 billion in AI chips to Meta, while Google Cloud makes Tensor Processing Units available to customers.
