Meta Demo sEMG Wristband for UI Breakthrough
META'S REALITY LABS, JUL 23 – Meta's wristband uses machine learning trained on 10,000 people to translate subtle muscle signals into hands-free computer commands, aiding users with limited mobility.
- On Wednesday, Meta’s Reality Labs unit published a Nature paper describing a prototype sEMG wristband that enables gesture control of Orion AR glasses.
- Some existing gesture-capture systems require line-of-sight camera sensors or are intrusive, prompting Meta researchers to develop a gesture-controlled wristband for unobtrusive computer interaction.
- The wristband streams muscle signals wirelessly via Bluetooth, captures wrist and forearm impulses including pinches, and operates without individual calibration.
- According to The Verge, user trials showed that the wristband translated pinches and flicks into responsive UI actions, while handwriting recognition runs at about 20.9 words per minute.
- University researchers and industry engineers can refine the methodology, while its price and complexity ensure it won’t reach consumers soon.
