Meta commits $1.5 billion for AI data center in Texas

  • Meta Platforms said on Wednesday it will invest $1.5 billion to build its 29th global data center in El Paso, Texas, with local leaders present at Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park.
  • A referral from Texas Governor Greg Abbott's office years ago and local tax incentives persuaded El Paso City Council to approve Meta Platforms' investment at a shovel-ready site.
  • The initial build will include 1.2 million square feet across two buildings, use a closed-loop, liquid-cooled system, and Meta says it will restore 200 percent of consumed water.
  • The project will create about 100 permanent jobs and employ over 1,800 construction workers at peak, boosting local investment and infrastructure, Meta said.
  • By 2028 the center is expected to power a city the size of San Francisco for a day, while hyperscalers plan over $360 billion spending in 2025 and Meta expands its Community Accelerator program.
