Meta Muse Image allows public Instagram photos to be used in AI generator: How to opt out
- Meta announced the Muse Image generator for Instagram and WhatsApp on Tuesday, promising "advanced reasoning to understand complex prompts, seamlessly blending multiple photos into high-quality creations." All public Instagram accounts were automatically opted into the feature.
- Anyone can tag your profile in a prompt to generate images based on your likeness. "Tagging a username lets Meta AI use public photos to build a visual that's ready to post," Meta explains, though users under 18 or with private accounts are excluded.
- Critics on Reddit and social media have denounced the automatic opt-in, with one user describing the feature as "a privacy landmine waiting to detonate," according to The New York Times. Others questioned the lack of explicit consent.
- Luckily, there are ways to opt out while keeping your account public. Tap the hamburger menu on your profile, scroll to "Sharing and reuse," and toggle off "Allow people to create with and reuse your content" for posts and reels.
- Another concern is that Instagram does not notify users when their content is reused, and disabling the setting does not delete images already created. Privacy laws in France may lead to further scrutiny regarding these practices.
