Meta debuts first AI coding agent to take on Anthropic and OpenAI

The terminal-based agent can plan, write and validate code while Meta offers lower-cost tiers and zero-data-retention options for enterprise users.

  • On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Meta released Muse Code, a terminal-based coding agent available in beta for developers. The tool enables complete software engineering tasks including planning changes, writing code, and validating results.
  • Meta is rolling out the agent to challenge Anthropic and OpenAI in the competitive coding-agent market. Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer, leads the initiative through Meta Superintelligence Labs.
  • Powered by Muse Spark 1.2, the tool features API pricing of $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens. Wang added that a "contributor tier" is "more than 10 times cheaper than" the standard pay-as-you-go option.
  • Unlike Claude Code and Codex, Muse Code currently lacks a dedicated app interface, operating solely through the terminal. Its local event log records model calls and edits, enabling users to resume work after system crashes.
