Two police officers charged after death of pregnant woman
The Crown Prosecution Service said the case follows an Independent Office for Police Conduct review and that both officers will appear in court.
- The Crown Prosecution Service authorized criminal charges against one current and one former Metropolitan Police officer following the October 17, 2024, fatal collision in South London. PC Chris Johnson faces causing death by dangerous driving; former PC Danny Tomkins faces dangerous driving.
- During the October 17, 2024, collision on Eltham Road, the 38-year-old victim died after her vehicle was struck by an unmarked police car. Her unborn child died at the scene; both officers were attached to the Metropolitan Police Taskforce.
- The Independent Office for Police Conduct concluded its investigation last year, with Tomkins' offense relating to "his alleged manner of driving." Johnson's charge centers on the fatal outcome of the collision itself.
- Both defendants are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 28, 2026. Acting Detective Chief Superintendent James Derham, who leads policing in Greenwich, said: "Our thoughts remain with the woman's family and friends."
- Local residents previously described the crash location as "one of the most dangerous in south-east London." Authorities cautioned that public comments must not prejudice the forthcoming court proceedings.
